EN AW-5754 vs EN AW-5083: Both 5xxx marine alloys — 5083 much stronger, 5754 more formable

EN AW-5754 vs EN AW-5083

Side-by-side chemical composition and mechanical property comparison.

Overview

EN AW-5754

3.3535

Aluminum5xxx (Al-Mg)

Medium-strength non-heat-treatable aluminium alloy with good corrosion resistance and excellent weldability. Lower Mg than 5083 for better formability. The standard alloy for automotive body panels (inner), chemical equipment, and food industry applications.

EN AW-5083

3.3547

Aluminum5xxx_mg

The highest-strength non-heat-treatable aluminum alloy. Al-Mg4.5-Mn with outstanding seawater and industrial chemical resistance. Retains exceptional strength after welding (unlike 6xxx/7xxx). ASTM B928 certified for marine service. THE shipbuilding aluminum — also used for rail cars, pressure vessels, cryogenic tanks, truck bodies, and LNG applications. Available O, H111, H116, H321 tempers.

Compatibility Assessment

5083 has 4.5% Mg (UTS 305 H321) vs 5754 with 3% Mg (UTS 245 H22). 5083 is the strongest non-heat-treatable Al and the default for ship hulls. 5754 is easier to form and less susceptible to stress corrosion at elevated temperatures. Choose 5083 for structural marine; 5754 for automotive/formed parts.
